Travel information

This page gives general information about travelling to Leuven.
  • By plane
  • There are two main airports in Belgium. National Airport Brussels Zaventem and Brussels South Chaleroi (Especially for the  cheap-airlines)
    It is recommended to come to the National airport because it offers better and easier connections to rail and other transportation to Leuven.
    From the National Airport goes a direct train to Leuven. It departures 17 and 39 minutes after every hour. The journey takes 15 minutes and costs 5.40 Eur. 
    There is no direct connection from the Charleroi Airport to Leuven. A bus to train station takes ca 15 minutes, train to Brussel Midi ca. 40 minutes, train to Leuven ca. 25 minutes. One way journey cost around 20 Eur.

    • Köln-Liege (reservation preferred: Thalys | DB, 60 minutes, ca 30 EUR); Liege-Leuven (35 minutes, 10 EUR)
    • Travelling from France
    • Thalys Paris Nord - Brussels-Midi (reservation, 90 minutes, 45 Eur); Brussels-Midi - Leuven (25 minutes, ca. 6 eur)
    • Travelling from The Netherlands
    • Thalys Amsterdam - Antwerp (reservation, 100 minutes, 50 Eur); Antwerp - Leuven (50 minutes, ca. 12 Eur)
    • Travelling from UK
    • Eurostar London St. Pancras - Brussels-Midi (reservation, 120 minutes, ca. 60 Eur); Brussels-Midi - Leuven (25 minutes, ca. 6 eur)
Make sure to catch the train to Leuven (Louvain) and not to Louvain-La-Neuve: while the French name for Leuven is indeed Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve is a different place. Check out the NMBS-website for detailed information

  • By car
  • Leuven can be conveniently reached by car. The E40 highway runs from Brussels via Leuven to Liege, whereas the E314 highway links Leuven with the province of Limburg and with Maastricht and Aachen, at about 1 hour distance.
